Creating an online course is a great way to examine and reinforce existing knowledge while helping others and earning money. Familiarizing yourself with our course creation process, requirements and best practices will help you create a successful course that attracts interested students.

Course Publication Process

  1. Draft
    Your course will remain in the Draft state while you are working on it. Once all of your course content is in place and you feel that it is ready for publication, submit your course for review.

  2. Review
    When you submit your course it will be reviewed by one of our Course Editors to make sure it is of acceptable quality and meets our course requirements. The Course Editor will contact you with any suggestions or concerns that come up during the review process. When your course is deemed complete, it will be marked “Published”.

  3. Published
    When approved by a Course Editor, your course is immediately published on Experts Exchange and open for enrollment.

Pricing and Payout

  1. Pricing Model
    During the course creation process you will be asked to set a price for your course. You can make your course free for premium members, or set your payout amount to anywhere from $1 to $1000 USD. You will earn 100% of the price you set for each sale of your course and Experts Exchange will add an additional fee to cover in-house costs (PayPal & credit card fees, infrastructure, labor, etc.) The fee is 25% for Premium Members and 40% for Free Members.

  2. Payout Process
    Payouts for courses sold on Experts Exchange are delivered through PayPal. Payouts are calculated every Tuesday and Friday and will be paid out the following Tuesday or Friday. For example, if you sell a course on Wednesday, calculations will be made Friday and you will receive payment on the following Tuesday.

Course Requirements

  1. Course Objective
    The objective of your course should be made clear in the course description so that students know what new knowledge they will walk away with after completion. Similarly, section and lesson descriptions are recommended to clarify what knowledge the student will gain upon completion of a specific portion of your course.

  2. Logical Structure
    Your course should have a clear, logical structure. Course content should be broken up into sections and lessons to allow for a smooth progression through the material. Generally speaking, courses are most effective when broken into digestible sections less than 15 minutes in length.

  3. Clearly Presented Quality Content
    Course content must be of high quality and free of audio/visual distractions. Try your best to ensure written material does not contain spelling or grammatical errors. Preferably, video content will have a 16:9 aspect ratio, full HD picture (1920x1080p) and be free of telecine or interlacing artifacts. Each video file submitted must be less than 1GB in size.

  4. Original & Unique Content
    Courses should be made up of your own original content. You may include quotes or short sections of other people’s work so long as you include the correct citations, references and attributions.

  5. Comply with Terms of Use
    As with all content posted on Experts Exchange, your course content must comply with the Experts Exchange Terms of Use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What is the license model for purchasers of courses?  Do they get permanent rights to view the video?

A: If a member purchases one of your video courses, they will have the right to view it forever. However, they can only do so while logged in on Experts Exchange.

Q: Does the author retain copyright? May I host my courses elsewhere as well?

A: Authors retain all copyrights. We can’t stop you from hosting your courses elsewhere, but we do encourage you to use Experts Exchange as your primary host, as our business model is such that you stand to earn more money with us than with any of our competitors.

Q: Will courses be available offline to purchasers?

A: For now, courses will only be available on our site.
